| LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS
satirises many things: science fiction, "B" movies, musical comedy itself
and even Faust legend. Set in Skid Row, a dilapidated section of a city
inhabited by vagrants, this brilliant musical comedy is played with simplicity,
honesty and sweetness, even when events are at their most outlandish.
The King Island cast has endeavoured to fulfil the authors intention, sic; "that when LITTLE SHOP is at its most honest, it is also at its funniest and most enjoyable". The story involves the evolution of a plant, an anthropomorphic cross between a Venus Fly Trap and an avocado. This strange and interesting plant was sold to Seymour a naive, insecure, well meaning florist's clerk who was taken in and cared for by Mr. Mushnik, a failed East Side florist. Seymour secretly admires his co-worker Audrey, who sees herself as living in her own private "B" movie. She lives in genuine fear of her boyfriend Orin, a tall, dark, handsome, egotistical dentist who has sadistic tendencies. Crystal, Ronette and Chiffon are three street urchins. They are young, hip, smart and the only people in the whole cast who really know what's going on. DON'T FEED THE PLANTS |
