My King Island

When asked to give an answer to the question " What has your King Island Experience been?" I immediately thought of the green of the Island. Coming from Queensland I had always thought of my homeland as a brown land NOT green. So I have portrayed the green hills, ocean and sky at Grassy. To have the green hills one must have grey skies and grey ocean more often than the lovely blue portrayed but I wanted to show a happy and summery day in this oasis. I do think of King Island as an oasis not just physically but also of the soul. I have found the people of this community to be friendly and forgiving of newcomers who have moved here to embrace the isolation, rural atmosphere and tranquility of the island. As with any paradise a serpent dwells here too - the wind - the never ceasing wind. I do get very tired of the wind. As I cannot draw or paint to my satisfaction, though I am learning, I have chosen to make an appliqué quilt. While quilting is a relatively new activity for me as well, it is embroidery and my experience is primarily in embroidery - cross-stitching for over 20 years

Sandra was taught the art of craft at her mother's knee and became greatly accomplished at embroidery, but specialised in cross-stitch. Sandra has a craft room that most crafters would sell and appendage for. In it, Sandra has now taken to quilting both ornamental and household items while continuing to cross-stitch with a patience that is astounding to behold.
