Paul Daniel
Living on King Island
affords one the opportunity to "get to know" people.
Most faces correspond with familiarity. You may not know their
name but you "know of them" and with time more information
will filter in.
I'd heard a lot about
Snow, I "knew of him" but for me his name had no face.
Once it was revealed "that's Snow" I felt compelled
to link the stories, mimicry and snippets of information, to the
face - an ink pen portrait.
Paul Daniel started
drawing in the 1989 and has since specialised in pen and ink.
He works predominately with black ink but has also created extremely
colourful works. The accomplished use of the inkpen often gives
a very textured appearance with always a bold display of character
regardless of subject.
Paul is primarily self
taught, however some important watercolour principles were learnt
from Newell Barret who conducted a series of workshops on King
Island in the early 90's.
In 1992 Paul shared
a successful exhibition with fellow King Island artist Kathryn
Cooper.
IN 1994-95 Paul was
chosen from hundreds of applicants to train in animation for the
Li'l Elvis Jones and the Truckstoppers production.
Between 2000 and 2003
he worked as a full-time illustrator, providing various cartons,
caricatures and portraits. His major contribution in this period
was illustrating some 140 colour images for the "To Know,
Worship and Love" book for the Melbourne Catholic Archdiocese.
Paul has also produced
a successful range of greeting cards which are sold through a
number of gift stores including the Melbourne Aquarium.
A personal highlight
for Paul was collecting $1000.00 People's Choice Award fro a pencil
portrait of the late John "Jack" Lumsden in the King
Island Arts festival.
Paul is currently living
with his wife, Cynthia, and young son, Joseph, on King Island.
He plans to get together a large body of new work for another
exhibition late next year.
