Felicity Matthews
When I first came to
Flinders Island my husband and I bought a cray fishing boat and
this allowed me to see the islands from the sea. Then we owned
an air charter company and this allowed me to see the islands
from the air. I love small patterns such as in shells and the
bark of tea tree, but I have been particularly influenced by the
large patterns and colours from above. My painting has evolved
over time, and I have been dealing with the difference between
my history in working with a very flat printed fabric format to
a more three dimensional textile, and painting. Creatively I am
guided intuitively, and I also have an interest in collecting
old fabrics and hand dyeing.
Felicity Matthews was awarded an Associate Diploma of Design (Textiles)
from RMIT in 1972. She spent the next ten years teaching art in
various secondary schools in Victoria and NSW. She has exhibited
her work, both textiles and paintings in several group exhibitions
including the Sale Art Gallery, Victoria. She spent many years
working in the textile industry as a printed textile designer,
working with companies such as Australian Textile Printing and
Beach Textiles.
