I'm
constantly looking towards the sky. It's true, I am a daydreamer
and I look for the stories the sky can tell - of its moods,
of an approaching storm, of sunlight dancing on clouds, of
silver linings.
However, it's
not all dreams and wonder. I work in the outdoors leading
young men and women from mainland Australia on journeys
into the island's environments and along the coastal fringe.
I rely on the sky for information and for safety, understanding
the language of the sky and the clouds gives me confidence
to plan adventurous experiences for these young adults -
to provide them with memories that they can draw on for
years to come.
The sky is such
a big part of island life
of my life. I see it as the
dominant landscape of King Island, ever present against
our rolling green hills and wild ocean waters, the home
of the winds that sweep through our towns and batter our
buildings - a reminder that we're not as big or important
as we often like to think.
As a kid I'd
often lie on my back and imagine shapes in the clouds only
to see them disappear before my eyes as the wind swept them
away
I still like being a kid.

Emerging photographic
artist Duncan Thomas works with themes including sense of place,
human identity and abstraction. He incorporates documentary techniques
and mise-en-scene to create a narrative illustrating human relationships
to place and space. In his abstract work Duncan will strip images
down to one or two distinctive elements and focus on the patterns
occurring in the natural and urban environments.
Recent published work
includes images for Water: The Australian Dilemma (2004), La Trobe
University Calender (2005) and images:CAPETOWN (2003) - part of
a group exhibition at Beads Gallery in Bendigo. He has also produced
promotional images for Strait on Shore (2006) and Strait Across
(2006). Prior to this Duncan operated a documentary photographic
business called Donut Productions. Now operating as donutmedia,
its primary focus is the Australian identity.
Duncan graduated with
a BA, majoring in Outdoor Education and Media Studies at La Trobe
University in 2004. He complimented this with a DipEd in Secondary
Education from La Trobe in 2005 and now works as a teacher on
King Island. Other areas of his practice involve writing, montage
and sound.
