On excursions with
the Tuesday Art Group here on Flinders Island I came to realise
that I'm interested in graphic art rather than painting, and working
with monotones rather than colour.
I began with pencil,
but found that I prefer pen and ink. The decisiveness of ink -
you can't rub it out! - helps me draw with greater confidence.
I like the strength and simplicity of ink strokes.
What I enjoy most is
exploring the detail of particular elements in the natural landscape,
rather than the broad scene.
In the future I hope
I can develop my drawings into tonal designs from which to produce
woodcuts or linocuts.
As a child Bronwen
Grutzner enjoyed sketching on trips to the country with her mother.
In her final year at school she again dabbled in drawing, doing
surreptitious self-portraits when she was supposed to be studying.
She has no formal training, however, now retired and living on
Flinders Island, she has returned to art as a hobby after a lapse
of 40 years.
