King Island :

"Shipwrecks & Safe Havens"
Take the virtual tour -
click on the links on the map.
Follow the trail to all sites around the island, where interpretation signage tells some of the stories of the shipwrecks, both heart breaking and heroic.
It also tells of the safe havens set up at Currie and Grassy, and of the welcome lighthouses built at Cape Wickham and Currie.

The King Island Maritime Trail was opened during the Descendants Weekend 3-5th August 2001.

Known descendants of shipwreck persons, lighthouse keepers, rescuers, shipping pioneers and others interested in maritime history visited the Island to commemorate our cultural heritage, a significant part of Australian history.
